Good natured rivalry is rife across our major cities – whether it’s over sporting events, the best dressed, dining spots, the finest coffee in the land or the ultimate cocktail bar – competition is fierce! Another title that’s up for grabs is that of the nation’s most stylish city. Urban dwellers across the country claim to be the most stylish lads and ladies inhabiting the coolest spots in our fair country, but is there a clear winner? Slightly straddling the fence, we think there’s something cool about every city – but there can only be one….

Sydney

Exclusive homes weave along the coast from Darling Point to Double Bay, coupled with stylish boutiques, epicurean eateries and designer jewellery stores dotted along their tree-lined streets. Does it get more stylish than this? With the iconic Sydney Harbour a sparkling jewel in Sydney’s crown and superb beaches just a short hop from the CBD, there’s plenty on offer in terms of both spots to look cool and spots to cool down. Despite their beachy proximity, Sydneysiders pride themselves on being well dressed. Corporate chic takes centre stage and beach boho is best left for a trip to Byron. On the wining and dining front, the Sydney scene has leapt forward with the recently developed Barangaroo waterfront precinct. Barangaroo has injected an uber cool dining district into what was previously a disused container terminal – all just a mere 4-minute stroll from Wynyard Station.

Perth

Hailed as the “Capital of Cool” by CNN correspondent Chris Dwyer, Perth is home to a laid back culture and idyllic climate which lends itself perfectly to some of the coolest spots to sip a craft beer in the sun. Home to the renowned Little Creatures brewery, 19 picture-perfect inner city beaches, the most sunshine hours of any Australian city and a progressive dining, sipping and fashion scene, it’s no wonder its been touted as one of the coolest travel destinations in the world.

Adelaide

There’s something sophisticated and stylish about a wine connoisseur, and for a wine lover, Adelaide is heaven! Renowned for its enviable vineyards paired with expertly curated cuisine, Adelaide even has its own annual Cellar Door Fest where you can meet, taste and discover the very best. Aside from a thriving wine culture, Adelaide is a progressive city of firsts – the first city to give women the right to vote, to recognise indigenous land rights, as well as criminalise sexual and racial discrimination. We think that’s pretty cool!

Brisbane

There’s a lot to love about the sunshine state, from the laidback lifestyle and the sub-tropical climate through to the 900 islands to explore dotted along the 7,000km coastline. With it’s very own bespoke architectural style – the Queenslander – which embraces the relaxed charm of the region, and the warm weather favouring a wardrobe crammed with year-round relaxed summer dresses and chic sandals – the carefree vibe is one we love.

Hobart

An island paradise, Tassie is rich in history yet embraces a lifestyle full of cutting edge local cuisine and boasts more golf courses per capita than anywhere else in the country. Here, you can really embrace life and style simultaneously. Dripping in stunning scenery, the Apple Isle is also home to MONA – the world-famous Museum of Old and New Art, and has a flourishing art and live music culture, making it a super stylish place to be seen.

Melbourne

A thriving creative hub makes Melbourne undeniably Australia’s epicentre of style. With local fashion labels making serious waves in the global market like Gorman, Viktoria & Woods and Scanlan Theodore, paving the way for up-and-comers. Cutting-edge style has become synonymous with Melbourne, and the best coffee, finest food and progressive fashion are always on the agenda, whilst also being known for its four seasons in one day (which is perfect for fashionistas to showcase their seasonal styles).

It is in March that the fanfare really begins. Home to the 10-day fashion and entertainment filled Melbourne Fashion Festival, whilst is recognised internationally and is undeniably the most stylish annual event here in Australia. The festival showcases everything from runway shows with established and emerging designers, through to styling and beauty workshops, industry seminars, entertainment, and a whole lot more. This year the festival will include free, ticketed digital runways which will be available to view from anywhere in the world.

So, while Melbourne can’t beat Sydney’s exclusive coastal homes and beaches, Perth’s sunshine hours, Adelaide’s wineries, Brisbane’s climate or Hobart’s scenery and lifestyle, as the home of the Melbourne Fashion Festival (and best coffee), it hands down takes the most stylish city title.
